Bluebird

You visit often, the sun a blanket
over blue and brown feathers,
eyes unbroken in search
of food or cover.

You are still for only a second,
but a second where time is distant,
and I become lost in the mind of a creature
whose limits exist only in its ability
to fly, where fear is in the simplicity of survival,
and mortality is irrelevant.

We share a moment in which you realize food
is far from the wood porch you stand perched on to,
and I am just another creature trapped behind glass,
watching you escape into the sky, once again.
