Ordinary men and women

it’s a march on o’connell street.
something about immigrants – people as usual
against them. perhaps 30. not enough
to fill a high school classroom
turned over at night for an adult
educational seminar. flags, brandished
manifestos. ordinary men and women,
and about as many cops,
and the same number of buses
backed up in a line behind them
like bubbles at a warm bottle
bottlecap. it happens quite regularly lately.
most of the people watching
are black or central asian, east
asian and south american corner shop staff.
most of them have children. I watch for a while
because you can’t turn away, but no-one sets fire
to a bicycle. it will continue for a while.
